In a previous post I wrote about a great lemon water drink that can help you reduce your intake of sugary drinks, like soda. At the end I mentioned that I use another great lemon water drink every morning to give a little zing to my body and mind.

Mornings for me are all about getting a healthy start on the day. I have several little rituals that I do daily to make up a powerful morning routine. Taking conscious, intentional actions to nourish my mind, body and spirit are essential for me to live my mission. It sets me up for success and carries me through my day energetically.

Positive body honoring actions you take in the morning significantly impact the rest of your decisions and moods throughout your day. There will be much more on morning routine and rituals in posts to come.

Another benefit of my morning rituals is an opportunity to experiment and try new things. I consider health and happiness to be one big constant series of experiments.

For a couple of years now I’ve kept several controls in my morning routine experiment. One is that I have been making a drink of water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and apple cider vinegar with consistency. With that mixture I have experimented with several different supplements for various health benefits including, maca, moringa, tongkat ali, chia seeds, raw garlic, raw ginger, turmeric (raw and powdered), Himalayan sea salt and several other herbs and super foods that are escaping my memory at this point in time.

As you would naturally assume, this elixir is sweet and delicious…

On another planet, and maybe for another species.

So why do I drink it? Well, that’s easy. I dig the various health benefits that all of the ingredients put into my body. Here are some of the reported health benefits of lemon juice, cayenne pepper and apple cider vinegar.

  • Improves skin health
  • Aids in collagen production
  • Lowers stroke risk
  • Prevents asthma symptoms
  • Increases iron absorption
  • Cleanses the lymphatic system
  • Assists in weight loss

  • Lowers glycemic response to starch
  • Can lessen production of kidney stones

  • Has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties
  • Promotes heart health
  • Fights tooth decay
  • Stimulates circulatory system

Am I done yet? Phew. That’s a lot of freakin’ health benefits!

Please keep in mind that any and all claims about nutrition and health can be refuted and revised at anytime. For every study showing any of these benefits, there may be one that found the exact opposite conclusion.

It’s also a big wake up call to my nervous system by blasting my taste buds and digestive tract with some very intense flavors. It has a way of instantly waking me up to being more alive and mindful of my senses. I am choosing to make an effort to hydrate and start my day with a body honoring choice.

This sets an intention for the rest of my day to be healthy, aware, awake, mindful and alive.

Gulping down this questionable tasting morning drink also sends a powerful message to my mind and body that not every single thing I do to create an environment for wellness and personal power has to be fun and easy. I make choices that enhance my experience on this earth and often they are fun, tasty and easy. When they are not, like this drink, they are setting the foundation for me to have more fun, health, clarity and ease in my life.

I take about 12 oz of water, a tablespoon or 2 of lemon juice, a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and about half a teaspoon of cayenne. Then I fill my glass with another 16 oz of water and drink that down within a few more minutes. So by the time I do anything else I’ve already drank 3 cups of water and am well on my way to my goal of staying hydrated.

I call this my internal shower. I don’t like to leave the house without a shower on the outside, why the heck would I leave without having a shower on the inside?
